MUSCATINE, Iowa — In recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), Crossroads, Inc., a local nonprofit dedicated to cultivating choice and inclusion for individuals with disabilities, is actively partnering with local businesses and city leaders to expand competitive, community-integrated employment across Muscatine and Cedar counties.
This October, under the national theme "Celebrating Value and Talent," Crossroads is shining a spotlight on its Supported Employment Program. The program actively matches motivated job seekers who have diverse physical, sensory, and neurodivergent traits with local employers needing dedicated, reliable staff.
Mayor Brad Bark proclaimed the month of October as Disability Employment Awareness Month in Muscatine during Tuesday’s (Oct. 20) Muscatine City Council meeting. Crossroads, Inc., staff, including Marc Hines, chief executive officer, Kenneth Brooks, development director, and Abbey Webb, supported employment manager, were present to accept the proclamation.
"At Crossroads we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to work, contribute, be valued for their abilities," said Webb during the council meeting. "For someone with a disability a job can mean so much more than a paycheck. It can mean independence, confidence, friendship, and a pride that comes with being a part of a team."
Crossroads highlights the ongoing support provided to both employees and employers, ensuring long-term success. A recent $200,000 grant from the HNI Charitable Foundation is helping renovate a new day habilitation facility on Lucas Street, which will double capacity and expand skill-building opportunities.
During NDEAM, Crossroads encourages local employers to embrace inclusive hiring through customized coaching and workplace support. Interested businesses can reach out to Crossroads at (563) 263-3545 or visit their main office.
