MUSCATINE, Iowa – The City of Muscatine is reaffirming its commitment to safe, stable, and attainable housing for all residents as Mayor Brad Bark officially proclaimed May 2026 as Affordable Housing Month in Muscatine during Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
The proclamation highlights the essential role that affordable housing plays in community well-being, economic stability, workforce development, and long-term neighborhood vitality. It also recognizes the ongoing work of local partners — including nonprofit organizations, housing advocates, developers, and service agencies — who collaborate to expand housing options for Muscatine residents.
“Affordable housing strengthens families, supports our workforce, and builds a healthier community,” Mayor Bark said during the signing. “Muscatine continues to make progress, and this month is an opportunity to celebrate that work while acknowledging the challenges still ahead.”

Melissa Rinnert, Housing Program Supervisor for the City of Muscatine, was at the Council meeting to accept the proclamation along with members of the housing staff.
“Housing is more than just a roof over a head,” said Rinnert. “It is the foundation for healthy families, strong neighborhoods, and educational opportunities that can change the trajectory of a child’s life. For many seniors, families, and people with disabilities affordable housing provides hope for a better future.”
Rinnert also noted that this month recognizes the housing professionals, nonprofit organizations, community partners, and advocates who work tirelessly to expand housing opportunities and support those in need.
“We will continue working together to address the challenges, promote inclusive communities, and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to live in safe and affordable housing,” said Rinnert.
