MUSCATINE, Iowa — The City of Muscatine is evaluating next steps following precautionary inspections that identified structural concerns in several downtown buildings.
Mandatory evacuations for the affected properties will remain in place. However, structural engineers and safety officials report that no additional deterioration is expected at this time.
After inspecting 20 buildings earlier this week, engineers determined that 17 structures require repairs due to structural instability. Most of the affected buildings are located in the 200 block of E. 2nd Street. The two buildings outside that block are:
201 W. 2nd Street
205 W. 2nd Street
City officials are meeting with property owners to review two potential approaches: demolition or structural stabilization. The city will evaluate each option carefully to balance the needs of residents, businesses and taxpayers. A decision is expected in early July.
“This has been a challenging time for Downtown Muscatine,” said Police Chief and Assistant City Administrator Anthony R. Kies. “While this situation hasn't been easy, we remain committed to doing everything possible to ensure the safety of our community. We appreciate the patience and support of residents as we navigate this evolving situation together.”
To support those affected, the city has launched a new resource webpage for residents and businesses. The page includes information from the Louisa Muscatine Disaster Coalition (LMDC), which has created the Downtown Muscatine Relief campaign to collect donations for impacted businesses. City leaders continue to encourage residents to shop at downtown businesses that remain open and unaffected.
Background
On June 13, two buildings already slated for demolition were deemed unsafe after an exterior wall at 203 E. 2nd Street partially collapsed onto the roof of 201 E. 2nd Street. Subsequent precautionary inspections identified additional structural concerns in nearby buildings. Due to unexpected movement in surrounding structures, the city expanded both inspections and evacuations throughout the block.
