Dayton, Ohio – The Quad Cities River Bandits capped off an undefeated postseason run Tuesday, defeating the Dayton Dragons 2-1 for the 2026 Midwest League Championship in front of a crowd of over 8,000 at Day Air Ballpark.
The title marks the River Bandits’ ninth in franchise history and the club’s second in its six years as the High-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
After his teammates shut out the Dragons in Game One of the best-of-three set Sunday, Royals’ No. 4 prospect (MLB Pipeline) and Quad Cities starter David Shields held Dayton without a run through the first two-thirds of Game Two.
The left-hander matched his career-high with 6.0 scoreless innings and struck out seven, including a pair in the third to escape a no-out, bases-loaded jam. Shields racked up a Midwest League-best 12 strikeouts over 9.0 postseason frames, both the second-most in High-A this season.

Quad Cities’ bats faced similar challenges against Dayton starter Kyle McCoy and reliever Jose Montero. In addition to stranding all five baserunners allowed over McCoy’s 4.0-inning effort, the River Bandits tallied just one hit between the second and seventh innings — a Jose Cerice single.
Following Shields’ departure, back-to-back extra-base hits broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the seventh, as Dayton tagged Dash Albus for the game’s first run when Kyle Henley plated Damien Ruiz’s one-out triple with a double flared down the right-field line. An error on Austin Charles allowed Henley to reach third later in the frame, but Albus limited the damage to a 1-0 Bandits deficit with a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play.
In the next half-inning, Tyriq Kemp sparked Quad Cities’ offense with its first extra-base hit of the night, putting the tying run into scoring position against Dayton reliever Victor Diaz with a hustle double to lead off the inning.
After hitting Asbel Gonzalez with a pitch, Diaz forced Zion Rose to ground into a double play, putting the tying run at third with two outs. Blake Mitchell then followed with the Bandits’ second home run of the postseason — a two-run go-ahead blast over the right-field berm that propelled Quad Cities to a 2-1 lead. Mitchell tied for fourth in the Midwest League with 23 home runs in the regular season.
While Trent Hodgdon finished off the eighth and completed a perfect top of the ninth for the Dragons, the one-run lead was enough for Yimi Presinal and LP Langevin.
After Presinal struck out a pair and stranded Kien Vu’s two-out single in the bottom of the eighth, Langevin sealed the Dragons’ fate in the ninth, converting his second-straight postseason save opportunity and striking out the side to end a game for the second appearance in a row.
Despite allowing Dayton’s only run, Albus (2-0) earned his second postseason win for Quad Cities, while Diaz (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing Mitchell’s go-ahead homer. Presinal was credited with a hold.
Quad Cities finished the postseason with the best team earned run average in High-A (1.25), allowing just five runs over 36.0 innings, while also pacing the level in WHIP (1.03) and opponent batting average (.189).
Jose Cerice helped lead Quad Cities at the plate, with a Midwest League-best .529 postseason on-base percentage and three RBI. Austin Charles ranked second in High-A with six RBI and accounted for the first of two Bandits playoff homers.
With the 2026 season in the rearview mirror, River Bandits baseball is slated to return April 2, 2027, when Quad Cities hosts the South Bend Cubs for an Opening Day rematch of this year’s West Division Championship Series at Modern Woodmen Park.
