MUSCATINE, Iowa – What began as a simple effort to give his wife a little peace and quiet after retirement turned into a second calling for Denny Jens, now honored as the 2026 MuscaBus Driver of the Year.
After retiring from Curtis Computer Products, Jens knew he needed something meaningful to fill his days — and something that would let his wife of more than 55 years, Nancy, enjoy her well-earned rest after decades of long hours at Bandag.
“She had worked so hard that I felt she needed some time for her peace of mind,” Jens said. “When I retired, I felt it was important for her health, and mine, for me to find something that would get me out of the house for a little while each day.”
That opportunity arrived in December 2014, when Jens joined Muscatine’s public transit system, MuscaBus.
A lifelong Muscatine resident, Jens spent most of his career in sales and marketing before retiring from Curtis Computer Products, formerly known as Ring King Visibles. His part-time role with the City quickly became more than a job — it became a way to stay connected to the community he loves.

“I really enjoy the interaction with the riders and our team and the feeling that we offer a great service to the community,” Jens said. “My daily goal is to have a positive attitude and to do my part to make every day a good day for our riders and our team.”
Transit Supervisor Amy Fortenbacher said Jens embodies what MuscaBus strives to deliver every day.
“Denny brings warmth, patience, and genuine care to every shift,” Fortenbacher said. “Our riders trust him, our team relies on him, and his commitment to safety and service sets a standard we’re proud of.”
Jens said the flexibility of the work has been a perfect fit.
“I have enjoyed driving for MuscaBus for over 11 years,” he said.
Outside of work, Jens enjoys long walks with Nancy, bike rides, golfing with friends, and traveling. His favorite moments, however, are those spent with family: sons Brandon and Cory (both married to Carolines), grandsons Ever and Gibson, and granddaughter Lucy.
Jens was honored at the Iowa Public Transit Association meeting on June 19 in Altoona and recognized by the mayor and city council at the June 23 Muscatine City Council meeting.
“Thank you for your commitment to providing safe transportation and great service,” Mayor Brad Bark said. “Without MuscaBus drivers, many members of our community would lack the freedom to access essential destinations like employment, medical care, and community resources.”
