An MMSD science teacher and four high school students were recognized at the Oct. 26 Board of Education meeting as recipients of the district’s People. Purpose. Pride. awards.
This month’s theme, Purpose: Advancing Educational Excellence, celebrates individuals who demonstrate a commitment to learning, leadership and the success of those around them.
The October honorees are:
Katie Venturini, eighth grade science teacher and Science Olympiad leader at Velma B. Hamilton Middle School
Noel Jordan, ninth grade student at East High School
Sam Aparicio, 12th grade student at Vel Phillips Memorial High School
Aby Sarr, 12th grade student at East High School
Dylan Larson, 12th grade student at Robert M. La Follette High School
Venturini was recognized for her dedication to student achievement and hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning. As leader of Hamilton’s Science Olympiad team, known as the Sci Hawks, she has helped grow participation to more than 90 students while creating an environment where students build confidence and take ownership of their learning.
The four student honorees were recognized for their academic commitment, leadership and contributions to their school communities. Jordan balances honors coursework and AVID with playing volleyball at East. At Memorial, Aparicio has demonstrated leadership and selflessness as a student-athlete, stepping into a new role on the football field while helping an injured teammate stay connected to the team.
Sarr’s leadership spans athletics, student organizations and community service, including helping lead a youth volleyball clinic for younger athletes. Larson, an honor roll student and AP Scholar with Distinction, takes advanced coursework at Madison College while serving as president of La Follette’s DECA chapter and competing in track and field.
“True leadership isn't measured solely by titles or scores on a board,” Superintendent Joe Gothard said. “What makes our students and staff exceptional is the steady dedication they bring every day, the kind of leadership that reaches beyond the court and the classroom to unite our entire school community as one.”
MMSD staff, students and community members can nominate individuals for future awards through the district.
