Rock Island’s Brea Beal (1) hauls in a rebound and looks for the putback against Galesburg’s Daija Range (42) during last week's Western Big 6 Conference game at Rock Island High School.

The Rock Island girls’ basketball team remained on course Tuesday for a Top 5 state-rankings showdown over the impending long holiday weekend.

The seven-time defending Western Big 6 Conference champs were No. 2 again behind unanimous No. 1 Maine West (21-0) in the latest Class 4A poll released by the Illinois Associated Press.

Rounding out the Top 5 in order behind Rock Island (18-1) are long-time sectional foil Edwardsville (18-2), Palatine Fremd (19-3) and Rockford Boylan (19-0).

The Rocks and Boylan are expected to meet for the title again Monday at DeKalb’s Martin Luther King Jr. Tournament. Boylan beat Rocky last season, and the Lady Titans’ lone loss over the last two seasons came to two-time defending state champ Geneva in last year’s Elite Eight.

In the boys’ vote, both Moline (16-2) and Wethersfield (15-2) moved up a spot in their respective Top 10s.

According to sportswriters and broadcasters across the state, Moline jumped up a spot, from a tie for ninth to eighth in the 4A poll. Wethersfield climbed from sixth to fifth in 1A.

The Geneseo girls (16-5) also hung on to a receiving votes poll position outside of the 3A Top 10.

Also Top 10 ranked from local conferences are the boys’ teams from Ottawa (14-1, 8th in 3A) and West Hancock (16-1, 7th in 2A).

Local leagues also account for still-receiving-votes squads such as the girls from Sterling (3A), Camp Point-Southeastern (2A) and Carthage Illini West (2A); and the boys from Sterling Newman (2A) and Spring Valley Hall (2A).

Among the new top-rated teams this week is unbeaten juggernaut Kankakee (24-0), which moved into a voting tie with incumbent No. 1 and defending state champ Peoria Richwoods (20-2).

Also new to the No. 1 spot are the boys’ teams from Nashville (18-2, 2A) and Providence-St. Mel (15-4, 1A).

Joining Maine West in the unanimous No. 1 category are the Belleville West boys (17-0, 4A) and Danville Schlarman girls (18-2, 1A).

Also remaining No. 1 this week are the Chicago Bogan boys (17-2, 3A) and Eureka girls (20-2, 2A).

The Dispatch-Argus-QCOnline participates in the nominating and voting process, which is weekly until the start of the postseasons in a respective class.
