A federal judge’s decision to block the Iowa law preventing local school boards from instituting mask mandates to control the spread of COVID-19 has put hundreds of board members across the state in a tough spot.

As we embark on the 2021-2022 school year, I would like to thank the Davenport School Board, superintendent, and Davenport Education Association negotiations team. This group of outstanding individuals did a great job of respecting special education teachers in the district with a $2,000 pay cut, thank you.

Over recent years, there has been increasing violence and shootings in Davenport. The source of violence often comes from hopelessness that leads to nihilism. That hopelessness often comes from generational poverty due to historical and current systemic oppression.

Last week, a district court judge sided with Scott County Supervisor John Maxwell and overturned a three-person panel’s decision to declare his spot on the county board vacant because of his membership on the North Scott School Board.

Voters in the Rock Island-Milan and Moline-Coal Valley school districts will elect school board members April 6. Candidates were invited to respond to a Quad-City Times and Moline Dispatch-Argus request for a brief biography and a statement about why they are seeking election. Voters will select candidates in both districts to serve four year terms, spanning from 2021 to 2025.
