Letter: Your choice

These are my thoughts on President Joe Biden’s speech last week.

I wonder why all those vaccinated people were wearing masks and social distancing. Are they that scared or are they trying to scare you?

The only systemic racism I see is the Democrats' racism of low expectations.

Trickle-down economics does work. Both former presidents Reagan and Trump have proven it.

The Democrats are upping their game from tax-and-spend, adding inflate.

For those of you that do not know, the Great Society was going to end poverty in America. We’ve spent $3 trillion and have not changed the poverty numbers one iota.

You tax something if you want to discourage it. Discouraging capital investment costs jobs and moves money into bonds. Neither helps the economy.

Maybe minorities want to come to America for a better life for their families. I don’t need to spend a billion dollars to figure that out. We need to help them improve their home prospects. Giving money to their home country’s government has not, and will not, work. I do not know how to solve this problem. However, having millions of illegal immigrants saturating our job market is not a solution. Close the border to illegal immigration, sex trafficking and drugs.

Democrats always promise to tax the rich to pay for their wish list. It always has resulted in middle-class tax increases.

You have a choice. Choose freedom or chose a central government like the old Soviet Union. I chose capitalism and free markets without government interference.

As presidents of the Quad Cities Bicycle Club and the Cornbelt Running Club we are dismayed with Riverdale’s decision to eliminate the safest route between our region’s most popular trails, the Duck Creek Trail (DCT) and the Mississippi River Trail (MRT).

I, like many people, was surprised by the decision to not run for re-election by Rep. Cheri Bustos. Despite not always agreeing with her, I feel she has done a darn good job of representing and promoting the needs and interests of our district. I was therefore extremely disappointed to read the reactions of Esther Joy King, a Republican candidate for the seat, and Mike Berg, a spokesman for the Republican Party. King had the good graces to at least thank Bustos for her service, but both of them made sure to snidely remark that she was "destined to lose" in 2022. If Bustos had announced her intention to run again, I could understand their remarks, but this was a cheap shot at an inappropriate time.

If you drive on Moline's 41st Street, you'll see compliant high school boys and girls who have been properly trained by their liberal teachers (a redundancy) to always wear their masks, even outside. But our "educators," who really don't want to be at school anyway, as evidenced by their dumb students and half-days, now want to extend their control, and that's what mask-wearing and shutdowns are all about if you're a Democrat, to the kids parents and grandparents.

Why do we keep wearing COVID masks in spite of their negative effects? We have been presented no data that shows they are helpful at all. Most of us who have gotten the disease have done so in spite of masks, social distancing, etc., and have had no idea where we picked it up.

Letter writer Steve Robinson gave us a compelling rebuttal to Don Wooten’s column "Old South’s ideas persist" about under-the-surface racism. I appreciate Robinson’s contribution to a rational exchange. But his conclusions about the end of racist America are not helpful, because they are wrong.

On May 2, a letter appeared in the paper criticizing Don Wooten's views regarding increasing racial discrimination in our country. The letter writer seems to think the civil rights movement and laws of the 1960's magically solved discrimination.

The ouster of Rep. Liz Cheney is a disgrace to the Republican Party. Obviously the representatives of Iowa support the big lie and are unable to think for themselves. All indications due to their voting records show Iowa's representatives have become nothing but pawns and stooges for the Republican Party. Now Iowans are faced with the realization that Iowa's representatives are not about truth or honesty.

Our national bird is the Eagle, long official, yet I demur. Our national bird is the bird we extol and treat best, coddle in an expensive nest, keep well-fueled, and fetishize like some men do stiletto shoes. That describes for me our national bird. It is the Silver ICBM, Initialism for Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile. I call it Silver Death Bird. We spend billions to keep Silver Death Bird in durable comfort in a very secure hardened silo. We provide well for our Death Bird to keep enemy Death Birds in their faraway nests.
