Davenport is very fortunate. Great leaders are very hard to come by, and that's why Davenport is very fortunate. Very few, if any, cities across the U.S. have a mayor with the leadership experiences of Mayor Mike Matson.

Retiring from the U.S. Army as a sergeant major (leadership); U.S. Army Ranger (leadership); Joint Forces Special Operations Command supervisor in Afghanistan (leadership); a top-secret security clearance (leadership), you can see that Mike Matson is special.

Upon returning to Davenport, he started the Army JROTC program (leadership) at Davenport Central High School, and was the lead instructor for 18 years.

He is a past commander of the Davenport American Legion Post 26 (leadership). In 2007, he was elected to the Davenport City Council, and served six consecutive terms. In 2019, he was elected mayor of Davenport. When Davenport had the civil unrest in 2020, Mayor Matson didn't "hide." He called a press conference in the early morning hours to update the public.

When COVID-19 hit, he continuously kept the residents of Davenport informed about the policies and procedures the city was putting in place. He made trips to Des Moines and Washington, D.C. to discuss public safety, violent crime strategies and gun violence. Mike listens to the residents. He will meet with you. He will "get back" to you in a timely manner. He will "act" when it's time to act. He is a mayor for all residents of Davenport.

Davenport is very fortunate!

Thank goodness for Gen. Mark Milley! It’s wonderful to know somebody was keeping an eye out for the country’s safety, while Trump was devolving into a muttering, stuttering, spewing glob of hatred — both about the election he lost and trying to rationalize the events of January 6 as just citizens exercising their right to freedom of speech. General Milley was only doing what he took an oath for, to “protect (the U.S.) from all invaders, foreign and domestic.”

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks has supported a few House votes, but not the legislation that matters most. House Democrats passed the "John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021" without Republicans. It’s the second time Miller-Meeks has opposed expanded voting rights legislation, voting against the "For the People Act."

Wake up, Iowa! Your penchant for voting for Republicans is endangering our democracy. The Republican majority in the Iowa Legislature voted for restricting Iowans' ability to vote, even though our last election was fair and fraud-free. The bedrock of our democracy is our ability to elect our leaders.

We shudder in horror when we watch men walk the streets fully armed as women flee for their lives, covering their faces and hiding in their homes. Neighbors are asked to spy on each other and report anyone who may be suspected of having committed a crime against the state. Children are schooled in a doctrine mandated by a small group of people who know what children need to learn and avoid any teaching that would interfere with their complete devotion to a way of life, ruled by the severe laws of a God who rules every aspect of their lives.

"Once a government is committed to the silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear." This was said by Democratic President Harry Truman.

I couldn’t believe it when I read that Rep. Miller-Meeks retweeted the fake news article that “Biden Orders VA To Withhold Health Benefits from Unvaccinated Veterans.” It was an item originally posted on the satirical website, Delaware Ohio News. Reportedly, Miller-Meeks retweeted this story to 11,000 of her followers, adding “if true, this is insane.” As a vaccinated veteran, such an order wouldn’t apply to me, but I was concerned about how it might affect my Vietnam-era former comrades. I had to check it out myself at
