Red, White & Boom! 2021 was the best ever. No surprise there. Each year the annual fireworks spectacular grows bigger and better than the year before. I want to thank the many generous sponsors, including the Downtown Davenport Partnership and District of Rock Island staff as well as the local organizing committee for all their efforts making this event the centerpiece of our Quad Cities summer. But there is one person I would like to single out for special recognition: Ken Croken attended the first meeting of the Red, White & Boom! organizing committee back in 2004 and he’s chaired the event now for the more than a decade. In fact, he is the last member of that original group that came to together for a special purpose: to ensure a truly memorable – and free – Independence Day celebration for all Quad Cities kids.

This was Croken’s last year leading the effort and he deserves a heartfelt "thank you" from the community. So, let me be the first.

Thank goodness for Gen. Mark Milley! It’s wonderful to know somebody was keeping an eye out for the country’s safety, while Trump was devolving into a muttering, stuttering, spewing glob of hatred — both about the election he lost and trying to rationalize the events of January 6 as just citizens exercising their right to freedom of speech. General Milley was only doing what he took an oath for, to “protect (the U.S.) from all invaders, foreign and domestic.”

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks has supported a few House votes, but not the legislation that matters most. House Democrats passed the "John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021" without Republicans. It’s the second time Miller-Meeks has opposed expanded voting rights legislation, voting against the "For the People Act."

Wake up, Iowa! Your penchant for voting for Republicans is endangering our democracy. The Republican majority in the Iowa Legislature voted for restricting Iowans' ability to vote, even though our last election was fair and fraud-free. The bedrock of our democracy is our ability to elect our leaders.

Election fraud is real. Mr. Rice on September 13 stated this fact in his letter. Voter fraud has been documented in several elections, in several states, both red and blue, over several years. Unfortunately, this is a human failing not limited only to elections, people cheat. What Mr. Rice, and everyone else who's under the mistaken view that the former president was robbed of re-election in 2020, is that in no state was the level of fraud enough to change the fact that the former president lost. Not in Georgia, not in Pennsylvania, not in Michigan, not in Arizona. Yes, the former president got more than 74 million votes, but President Biden received over 81 million. Several presidential elections have been much closer, specifically in 2000 when the difference was less than 600,000 votes, not 7 million. The Republican Attorney General could find no significant fraud in 2020, and every bi-partisan investigation has come to the same conclusion. Mr. Rice's analogy with Star Wars is interesting, but the trilogy is a fictional tale and so is the belief that the former president won the election. There are winners and losers in every election and it's way past time that people finally come to grips with this fact and stop living in a fictional world.

"Once a government is committed to the silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear." This was said by Democratic President Harry Truman.
