Letter: Take precautions

  • 0

Hello people. I am 67-years-old and I have COPD and CML leukemia. The only thing that is keeping me alive are the Covid vaccines. Now, 5-11 year old children are probably not high risk, but if they are not vaccinated Covid will continue to circulate among our people long after I have passed away. So please vaccinate everyone of all ages so we can go on living. And that is what makes me wonder why a former president did not want anyone to take precautions to stop a pandemic.

I remember Donald Trump's children arriving at a debate masked, and when seated removing their masks. That is what makes me wonder. Freedom should not mean you put your life in danger. This is a public health problem. It has nothing to do with politics.

There are many who feel that the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol building was fake, staged or perpetrated by antifa, BLM or the FBI. One person knew it was real and knew who was behind it. On the day of the attack, Donald Trump got on camera and stated the attack was prompted by a stolen election (establishing motive) and those involved were angry (establishing the culprits). He went on to say that he loved those involved.

After reading "Legislators Plan To Take Up Worker Shortage”, in the Jan. 5 issue of this newspaper, I became sick. I am sick of the governor and legislature refusing to address the real cause of Iowa’s worker shortage. That cause is COVID!

Being a Democrat, and therefore a liberal, I find myself confounded by what I see as the hypocritical point of view Republicans have toward two different subjects, but that are still related: abortion rights and the coronavirus.

Back in 2012, when my 1986 Volvo station wagon got too expensive maintain, I decided to sell my car and ride the city bus. Since then there has been a lot of changes to bus routes and drivers. My main complaint is the rudeness of drivers, and they make me think I should buy a car again or walk.

Another day, another wacko idea from the Iowa Legislature. According to reports in this newspaper, Senators Jake Chapman and Brad Zaun "support bringing criminal charges against teachers and librarians who disseminate books Chapman and Zaun deem to be obscene."

Let me respond to the letter entitled "Hypocritical". The writer states that a Republican woman who refuses a vaccine "has no right to endanger innocent people she will come in contact with, and cause in effect their death." I, an independent voter with several immune deficiencies, despite being double vaccinated along with a booster shot, caught a so-called breakthrough Covid infection over the holidays from a relative who was double-vaccinated, who unknowingly caught it from another vaccinated acquaintance.

When this newspaper reported that state Sen. Roby Smith was running for Iowa Treasurer to protect Iowans from the Biden administration, which is supposedly "determined to invade our financial privacy," I thought "Wow, Roby Smith supports tax cheats."

A new movement is being formed, one that would change our custom of driving on the right side to the left. Its not waiting for a day when we would all change: instead, they advocate that all true believers begin immediately to do this. They admit many crashes will be inevitable, but they are willing to make this sacrifice in order to achieve their goal. (This is nonsense, of course, but no more nonsensical than the tide of lies and twisted half-truths that pour daily from Fox News and social media.)
