Letter: Some advice

{{featured_button_text}}

An open letter to Joe Biden and other Democratic leaders:

Perhaps you will be surprised at the brazenness of such a humble person as I to address such a distinguished gentleman as you, but I do so with the thought that my greater age allows me to pass my wisdom on to a younger man.

I have great respect for you and your party but I have recently been disappointed. I’ve received in my email many documents asking for money, but in an underhanded way: They first indicate the need for my advice and then request a donation. I conclude it is not the advice they want but just the money, so I will offer my advice in this way:

Continue your own campaign at a high level but tell us more about yourself and your achievements and plans for the future; encourage other leaders to continue being honorable and truthful but to sharpen their attack. Some have said: "We must attack from above," but exceptions must be made when one’s opponent is, to quote an adage learned back on the farm, "lower than a snake’s belly."

Sometimes one must get down in the dirt with a bully in order to defend oneself. If the 2016 candidate had dubbed Trump "Mad Donald" when he called her "Crooked Hillary", she would have won and spared us all this misery. "Pinocchio Junior" would be a good choice for Kamala Harris to use now.

One of the silver linings of this pandemic year has been the opportunity it’s given my fiancée and me to explore the Loud Thunder Forest Preserve. Thanks to a boat rental service that generates funds for the park's operations, we discovered a love for kayaking and the peaceful atmosphere of a lake free from gas motors. Aside from time on the lake, waking up next to the water at the Riverview Campground is an experience every Quad Citizen deserves to experience.

The Republican Party screams that only they can stop the socialists (or communists, or anarchists) from destroying the country. They've been using the same scare tactics since 1920. News flash! We've had seven Democratic administrations since 1920, and the United States hasn't gone socialist (or communist, or anarchist).

This proposed constitutional amendment will create an equitable tax structure, and 97% of Illinois taxpayers will either see a tax cut or no change to their taxes. Individuals that make more than $250,000 have been paying around 7% of their income in total taxes in the state, while middle-class residents have been paying around 13%.

In 2016, Mitch McConnell held President Obama’s nomination for the Supreme Court hostage for 293 days. He used the excuse it was too close to the election.

I have seen it reported on ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, etc., comparing the COVID-19 deaths in the United States to Canada, Germany, etc. Is this a fair or equal comparison? How are these countries reporting covid deaths?

Donald Trump's claim that he didn't tell the the citizens of the United States about the seriousness of the possible COVID-19 pandemic because he didn't want them to panic is just another of his huge lies. He didn't want to shut the economy down and risk losing votes. Instead, thousands of people have been infected and died.

On November 3rd, we will be asked to trust Illinois lawmakers and give them greater power to decide who gets taxed how much and how often. Don't believe the ads that say 97% of the people will be taxed less. It always sounds good when they say they are going to tax someone else (the wealthy), but the middle class is where the bulk of the taxable income exists.
