This is in response to the Oct. 16 letter claiming President Biden is "not capable." Apparently the writer had her head in the sand for the four years of the prior administration when the real lies were being told — and still are.

The protest of Sharon Weiss, of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria, that "we have not left the room" reminded me of a Warren Harding quote: "I have no trouble with my enemies...but my damn friends...they're the ones that keep me walking the floor nights."

Does any society benefit from rigid definitions of manhood and womanhood? Of personhood? At a time when constricting, harmful definitions of gender are loosening, dissolving and broadening to more accurately reflect the spectrum of human behavior and identity, I agree with columnist Kathleen Parker that Sen. Josh Hawley’s version of masculinity seems draconian and sorely outmoded.

I see that Republican U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks has decided to run for re-election in the new Iowa First District. That’s bad news for the people living there, because she has a terrible voting record.

If you knew that 66% of all Iowans were registered for a single state program, and that 76% of those registrants actively participated, you would agree that it's very popular. Even better, it's fraud-free, having no cases of wrongful participation, and it's not a give-away, costing only $2.77 per participant.

What is on my mind is of little import because I can't influence our congressmen to follow their collective consciences and do what they know is right and truthful. The Republicans are taking the advice of the elderly lawyer to the young one. Pound the table because you realize both the law and the facts are against you. Will this happen? It's happening now. Republican congressmen and their lawyers are symbolically pounding the table by continuously spreading lies instead of facts.

The Trump activists united in attacking and entering the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, were helping to fulfill the dream of Karl Marx, the overthrow of capitalism. Karl Marx, according to historian J. Rufus Fears in "The Wisdom of History" (2007) declares that Marx, a German, is the father of communism. His Communist Manifesto of 1848 called on workers of the world to unite. Fears states that by the end of his life, Marx saw completion of Das Kapital as their Bible, to destroy capitalism.

In 1982, my wife went through "Check Point Charlie" at the Berlin Wall to visit communist East Berlin. East Berlin was drab. The tour guide excitedly described a very large government-designed, multi-story grey concrete building as their latest structure to house many families "and it has a bathroom on the ends of each floor!"
