Preventing pregnancy

In the name of heaven, what is wrong with people who have been tasked with serving and representing the citizens of this country? The entire substance of this letter is found in one statement: teach human beings to avoid pregnancy, not allow or encourage them to destroy precious human life at will! Human reproduction is not a political issue. It is a social responsibility we must assume if our species is to survive.

Ignorance of basic human physiology and human sexuality have resulted in the total disregard for human life that abortion is. Aborting a life because it is inconvenient is morally bereft of any logical reason.

Preventing pregnancy is called birth control. Teach birth control and respect for the power of human sexuality and drastically drop the numbers of humans being born. Birth control is not a political issue. Birth control is not something that should be ignored due to religious mandate.

Good jobs

Deaf adults should be getting better jobs! It is very hard in our culture to get good jobs in Illinois!

A power grab

I am truly concerned about the attacks on our first amendment right of free speech. Last week, Attorney General Merrick Garland wrote a letter that weaponizes the FBI to investigate angry parents who are confronting school boards about teaching Critical Race Theory as “domestic terrorists.”

Critical Race Theory is grounded in Marxism and teaches that America is a nation founded on white supremacist institutions, and the only way to “fix” America is for socialists to overthrow the entire system.

From the military all the way down to school children, the radical left is pushing Critical Race Theory in all areas of America.

This has concerned parents mobilizing all across America to try to stop their children from being indoctrinated into the left by Critical Race Theory.

And this power grab by the left will, as The 1619 Project demonstrates a wrong history of our country, seek to redefine our families and our heritage. Our children are under the authority and rightful ownership of parents, not the government or an educator.

Garland is weaponizing the Justice Department by using the FBI to pursue concerned parents and silence them through intimidation. I would hope that Illinois and other states like Florida will defend the free speech rights of its citizens and will not allow federal agents to squelch dissent.

I think it is morally and ethically wrong that Deere & Co. is not making some sincere effort to reach an agreement with the union. Deere made $2.71 billion last year in net income. John Deere should quit catering to overly wealthy stock holders and do the right thing and get this contract settled.

I would like to add to comments on Bill Bloom's Oct. 5 letter. He has recognized how badly the media treated former President Donald Trump in his four-year term, compared with no criticism of President Joe Biden and, frankly, no news he provides back to us citizens.

This is in response to the Oct. 16 letter claiming President Biden is "not capable." Apparently the writer had her head in the sand for the four years of the prior administration when the real lies were being told — and still are.

Democrats have sold out America by allowing and encouraging the invasion of illegal immigrants into our country. They use words like humanity, compassion, and our moral obligation to try to shame us because we believe in the Constitution and think America's poor and hard working Americans should come first.

Train service from Moline to Chicago will not be high-speed public transportation; at best, it will be a three-hour amusement ride. Want to take it as a feeder to O’Hare to catch a plane? Sorry, it doesn’t come within 20 miles of the airport. Guess you will have to take another train from downtown back to the airport and add an hour or two. Cubs, Sox and Bear games — now we are talking! This might make sense for maybe a thousand or so Quad-Citians in a year. And for the people who can afford $250 per night for a hotel room downtown, this might make for a memorable $1,500 weekend trip for the family for maybe another thousand folks.

My experiences with so many different people in my life have affected my viewpoints; I have to admit that. But I am shocked by the bad manners and lack of caring about others that I see by many citizens lately on the news. There are also many lies on the internet and television and even in some editorials that are convincing people toward believing those lies, dwelling in their hate, and acting out with discord.

I am a person who went to Davenport, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley, and Catholic schools in my K-12 school life. I am a parent of one Davenport graduate and two current students. I am married to a high school social worker in the Davenport district who day in and day out works incredibly hard on very difficult situations for families and students in need.

Our family moved to Davenport in March 1963. We have seen many Davenport mayors and voted in all their elections. Some were a credit to our city and some were borderline.

The article, "Deere workers 'willing to fight'," (Oct. 15), used interesting language to describe the current UAW strike. At one point, the strikers were described as "union brothers and sisters," (not union members?), and in another section, passersby were honking their car horns in "solidarity" (not support?).

The Canadian Pacific Railway's U.S. mainline runs directly through Davenport/Bettendorf, etc., and connects Kansas City to all of Canada. The CP and the Kansas City Southern Railroad are merging. The KCS runs from Kansas City to Laredo, Texas, where it connects the Mexican National Railroad. This will create a single company land bridge between Canada and Mexico for the first time and will surely increase the daily number and lengths of trains if the merger is worth doing — you'd better believe they wouldn’t be doing it otherwise.
