Letter: Brave and honorable

My two older brothers served in World War II, and both were wounded. Bob lost a leg and Doug lost an arm. Neither knew the other had been wounded until they were sent to the same hospital and met while walking in the hallway. Doug died from tuberculosis at the age of 26.

My brothers were not "suckers" or "losers". They were brave and honorable young men. Donald Trump is a disgrace to the United States of America.

The problems in America are not guns and large ammunition magazines or mental health. It's cops who are the problem. Cops are bad role models and are doing things they are not suppose to be doing.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Illinois' state population peaked in 2013. From 2013’s peak population of 12,895,129 to a 2019 population of 12,671,821, we have lost over 223,000 people. I have no idea the number of businesses we have lost in the last six years. Just count the businesses the last couple of years that have left Moline: Sam’s Club, Best Buy, Kmart, and Mills Chevrolet, to name a few. During every year for the last six years we have lost population and businesses.

The survival of our American democratic experiment requires two functional political parties representing both conservative and progressive viewpoints. Both parties must believe in good government and adhere to the democratic principles, rule of law, and checks and balances laid out in our Constitution. Both parties must represent policies and values based in fact and science so that vibrant conversations and compromise can occur, allowing politicians to work together as public servants representing all Americans in our democratic society.

President Donald Trump’s current shortchanging of the economic life of our land comes from the same kind of irresponsibility as a bankrupt individual who writes more and more bad checks on a totally overdrawn account because he still has printed books of blank ones.

The derecho storm was another climate change red flag. Extreme weather swings like a derecho wreak havoc on farmers. Farmers in Guatemala have very serious red flag problems with devastating floods and scorching droughts, causing disease and pests never before experienced. Feeding their children enough to avoid malnutrition has become nearly impossible.

Three simple, common sense directives: wear a mask, social distance, wash hands frequently. Yet, there are those who refuse to comply. They must think they’re invincible. Think again. COVID-19 knows no age, gender, race, religion or economic status. It will strike anyone, and often with a vengeance.

Living in Illinois, I sure am glad I'm not faced with the task of deciding whether to vote for U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst or challenger Theresa Greenfield. From watching their campaign ads, it's obvious these are two horrible women.

"Great relationships are based on clarity, not mind-reading," according to Steven Arterburn. Modern day liberals/progressives persistently tell what conservatives are thinking even though they are consistently incorrect. When liberals, on the other hand, openly say or do something consistent with their left-wing philosophy, they routinely deny what was their obvious intent. Liberal politicians and the lapdog news media immediately and consistently affirm the liberal assertions, however consistently incorrect they may be.
