Iowa had record voter turnout in last year's presidential election. A record 1.7 million voted, representing nearly 76% turnout, with no major allegations of fraud. Yes, there was significant emotion involved with this election and the COVID-19 pandemic was raging throughout the country. As a result, a number of states, including Iowa, took extraordinary steps to ensure that voters had an opportunity to vote safely without putting themselves and poll workers at risk of exposure to COVID or long lines at polling places.

I am in the over-65 age group. I know that many in this vulnerable age group are waiting (im)patiently for their name to come up.

In June 2020, the Wall Street Journal published an op-ed by Vice President Mike Pence about the Trump administration’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Pence wrote, "We are winning the fight against the invisible enemy," despite factual evidence to the contrary. In a letter to the publisher of the newspaper, 280 newsroom staffers at the Journal criticized "Opinion’s lack of fact-checking and transparency, and its apparent disregard for evidence,” citing Pence’s op-ed, among others.

After a record vote by mail turnout in the last election, an election with no verifiable examples of voter fraud in Iowa, our state Republicans think now is the time to rush a major voter suppression bill through the Legislature. They want to make it harder for all Iowans to vote.

Removing the Western Illinois University-Quad-City campus would be disastrous for our region. As a current senior, the WIU-QC campus is the only way I'm able to earn a bachelor's degree, affordably, at home. Driving to the WIU-Macomb campus for class, while working in Moline, would be impossible and simply not a feasible option — nor is attending a private institution due to tuition costs.

Doubt about the result fuels the appeal by Clinton County’s Rita Hart concerning her race for the U.S. House of Representatives. She would accept the voters choosing someone else but not leaving legal votes uncounted. Iowans of the 2nd Congressional District have the right to decide who will represent them in Congress, and they have decided. But we don’t know whether they picked Hart or Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Ottumwa. There are 22 legal but uncounted ballots, even though Miller-Meeks has been provisionally seated.

I don't live in Moline so I can't vote for her, but if I did, I'd vote for Stephanie Acri for mayor.

Sangeetha Rayapati is the best choice for Moline mayor. Her passion for our community shines through in everything that she does. I had the privilege of witnessing her campaign for Moline school board and subsequent service as vice president and then president of the school board. Before that, I knew her to be, and know her still to be, an engaging, inspiring, and dedicated educator. Her service in all of these roles and her natural capacity as a leader, combined with her vision for our community, make her the unquestionable choice for my vote on April 6. I urge you to join me in supporting Sangeetha Rayapati.
