Train service from Moline to Chicago will not be high-speed public transportation; at best, it will be a three-hour amusement ride. Want to take it as a feeder to O’Hare to catch a plane? Sorry, it doesn’t come within 20 miles of the airport. Guess you will have to take another train from downtown back to the airport and add an hour or two. Cubs, Sox and Bear games — now we are talking! This might make sense for maybe a thousand or so Quad-Citians in a year. And for the people who can afford $250 per night for a hotel room downtown, this might make for a memorable $1,500 weekend trip for the family for maybe another thousand folks.

If we really want a conveyance so we can sit back and enjoy the ride without having to drive, we already have that, too. It’s called Greyhound Bus and it currently leaves multiple times a day. But a serious suggestion: Use the new Moline terminal to board luxury tour buses to take travelers to Princeton, Ill., to catch the existing AMTRAK.

AMTRAK already uses this system to expand routes off the tracks. Downside to the feeder approach is government politicians won’t get to spend $250 million to upgrade track and buy new trains, but that money would fix the Illinois Quad Cities' bombed out streets.

There are reasons AMTRAK gets about $2 billion in subsidies a year yet still looses about $700 million – ideas like this.

For decades the mantra of the NRA has been, "Guns don’t kill people, people kill people." So now, what to do with the Alec Baldwin killing of an innocent bystander and the acquittal of Kyle Rittenhouse and his automatic rifle? Maybe the arming of everybody making movies so that if a gun is pointed at someone, that person can be immediately shot by others. Maybe the NRA can have designated vigilantes in every city to be sure the bloodshed is evenly distributed. Or it might just be easier to redefine what "people" means to exclude actors and teenagers. To NRA members: Consider dropping your support of this organization that encourages vigilantes killing people in the streets. The Second Amendment is alive and well in this country and it doesn’t need your worship to protect it.

The protest of Sharon Weiss, of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria, that "we have not left the room" reminded me of a Warren Harding quote: "I have no trouble with my enemies...but my damn friends...they're the ones that keep me walking the floor nights."

What is going on with the Republican Party these days? The party has decided to appeal to many uneducated, uninformed, misinformed, social media illiterate citizens. These voters can be manipulated to vote for MAGA-type candidates. These are the core of the base the leaders rely on to win future elections and destroy democracy. An attempted violent coup was not successful. As a result, the GOP has worked unceasingly on dismantling democracy by attacking voting rights.

My antenna raised when the news broke that a hedge fund, Alden Global Capital, was potentially taking over Lee Enterprises. Let me first state that I am a firm believer in capitalism and a mixed-based economy.

An audit conducted by State Auditor Rob Sand found that Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds paid $448,449 in unsupported salaries within the governor's office from Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES) money. Now I heard Reynolds is trying to get approval that this is OK. Isn't this like closing the barn door after the animals got out? Or, it's like saying "it's better to ask forgiveness instead of permission?"

How uninformed can a person be? I ask you, how uninformed can a person be? To use a phrase like "American Taliban" is about as uninformed as anyone could be. The Taliban army has disarmed Afghanistan and turned the war zone into a place to be ruled by Islamic law. They express their laws with uses of offensive tactics, including civilian massacres, terrorist attacks, forced evictions and torture. On the other hand, the right to life people are those who value life in the United States of America.

It's totally simple. Climate change threatens human life on this planet. Finding ways to confront and resolve global warming is our most all-encompassing pro-life issue.

Some states are changing voting laws to enhance their party. "Wrong." There should be only one law to cover the U.S. and all its holdings, that a legal citizen who is a registered voter has one vote for their choice. No extensions, no recall.
