      With the John Deere Classic, a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour, taking place this week at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, we are reminded of another golf tournament on the PGA Tour that was once held at the Davenport Country Club.

        During the past two weeks our air conditioner, still under warranty, quit working on three occasions. Each time a service man got it going again. The second time it was worked on it lasted for six hours.

          Geologists tell us that the Rock River is older than Lake Michigan, but this year there’s something new. On June 3, we witnessed the grand opening of the Rock River Trail system.

            The late Kay Fellows, a writer friend, who wrote for the “Review,” an Erie weekly newspaper, sent us a copy of a story, “The Enigma of the Headless Hunter,” from the December 1935 issue of “True Detective Mysteries.”

            Corn seeds take a tremendous amount of time and money to develop. So it is expensive and troublesome for companies such as DuPont Pioneer, Monsanto and LG seeds when the Chinese steal GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) seeds from experimental fields in Iowa and Illinois.

            At 8:45 a.m. May 18, 1927 an elementary school at Bath, Mich., north of East Lansing, exploded killing 36 children and two teachers. There were 58 people injured and other deaths related to the catastrophe. The school had about 250 students registered at that time.

            In March 1929, the Rock River reached its highest point in years. The rise in the water levels of both the Mississippi and Rock rivers were causing havoc. The Rock River was causing a lot of trouble north of Moline in Prophetstown and the surrounding area.

            Once again, we are reminded that the Mississippi River can still go on its proverbial “bender.” The Mississippi River is expected to reach 17.1 feet -- 2.1 feet above flood stage at Lock & Dam 15 -- around May 3, as I write this. But it cannot cause the destruction that it once did.

            In 1948, there were large numbers in attendance at church on Easter Sunday. There were also many Easter-related activities in that pre-television era during Easter weekend.

            Years ago I often sang “I know That My Redeemer Liveth,” as a solo on Easter Sunday in a church. It is an air from Part III of George Frideric Handel’s oratorio, “Messiah.” It’s a lovely sonorous song, but a challenge to the singer. It was written for a coloratura soprano.

            Ulysses S. Grant, we grew up hearing, was the most famous Union general in the Civil War. In February 1862, 155 years ago, Grant cheered up the Union when he captured both Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in Tennessee. Nevertheless, his theater commander considered replacing him.
