Walter L. Erwin Jr., 94, formerly of Rock Island, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017, at UnityPoint Health-Trinity Rock Island.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th St., Moline, with the Rev. Dr. David Esche officiating. Burial is at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Honor Flight of the Quad Cities. Friends are invited to join the family at a funeral luncheon at CityView Celebrations at Trimble Pointe following the burial.
Walter Lee Erwin was born Sept. 3, 1922, in Earlham, Iowa, to Walter Sr. and Margaret Whitney Erwin. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and married Kathryn Hallquist on Nov. 13, 1942, in Kahoka, Mo. She died Sept. 2, 1998.
He was an estimator for Desaulniers Printing Company, Moline, for 40 years, retiring in 1984. He was an active member of Moline Turners for many years and a member of South Park Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, and Svithoid Club, Moline. He belonged to the Moline YMCA for many years, where he played racquetball until he was 90, and enjoyed golf, fishing and volleyball.
Walter is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Randy Walters, Geneseo; three grandchildren, Holly Popov and her husband, Ted, Thom Walters and his girlfriend, Denise Ballard, and Jay Walters and his wife, Kelly; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn; a granddaughter, Lisa Walters; a sister, Katherine Bauersfeld; and a special friend, Carol Engelhaupht.
