Russell L. Tesch, 96, Flanagan, Ill., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015, at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline.
Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, Nov. 13, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Flanagan, with the Rev. Mark Knappe officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour before the service Friday at the church. Burial with military rites by the Flanagan American Legion will follow in Center Cemetery, Flanagan. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, Flanagan, where he was a lifelong member. Calvert-Johnson & Froelich Memorial Home, Flanagan, is assisting the family with arrangements.
While living in the Quad-Cities, he attended Calvary Church of the Quad Cities.
Russell was born Sept. 11, 1919, the son of Christopher and Sena Tesch. He married Rocella Schlueter on Feb. 25, 1941. They farmed and maintained a 10,000 bird poultry egg-laying operation in rural Flanagan. He also worked for the ASC office in Pontiac. He had been a board member of St. John's Lutheran Church and a board member of Cornell High School. In 1992, he and Rocella retired and moved from the farm and to the village of Flanagan. In 2010, when Rocella was in failing health, they moved to the Quad-Cities to be close to their daughters. Russell and Rocella loved to ballroom and polka dance and they would travel many miles to attend dances with their friends. Russell was proud to share his Sept. 11 birthday with his grandson, Ryan Martin, and his great-great-grandson, Hayden Erickson, who was born on his 90th birthday.
Russell was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in France during World War II. He was recognized several times for his service in recent years. In September 2011, he was able to go on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
Survivors include his daughters, Carolyn (Leroy) Fuller, Coal Valley, Dru (Randall) Verplaetse, Colona; granddaughter, Joleen (Scott) Erickson, Land O'Lakes, Fla.; grandsons, Brad (Nikki) Martin, Oswego, Ill., Corey (Desi) Martin, Davenport, and Ryan Martin, Wilmington, N.C.; great-grandsons, Justin (Kayla) Erickson, Dade City, Fla., Jared (Natasha) Erickson, Wesley Chapel, Fla., great-granddaughter, Ashlee Fuller, Silvis, Taylor Martin, Riley Martin and Emma Martin, Oswego; great-great-grandsons, Hayden Erickson and Cohen Erickson; great-great-granddaughters, Madison Fuller, MacKenzie Fuller and Adelyn Erickson; sisters-in-law, Wilda Crow, Flanagan, Beata (Elmer) Aupperle, Champaign, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rocella; his grandson, Lonnie Fuller; brothers, Orville Tesch and Vernon Tesch; sisters, Rose Hodel, Gladys Juenger, and twin sister, Ruth Zurlinden.
The family would like to thank the nursing and support staff at Lighthouse at Silvis, Hope Creek Care Center and Trinity Hospice for the special care they gave to Russell.
