Robert "Bob" E. Pettit, 67, of Cordova, passed away in the early morning of Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, at Gibson-Bode Funeral Home, Port Byron. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Cordova Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Rock Island County Historical Society, Genesis Hospice or Cordova Baptist Church.
Bob was born Nov. 20, 1948, the son of Robert and Eleanor Moody Sidlinger. His parents divorced, and Bob was raised by Eleanor and George Pettit. Bob graduated from Riverdale High School, Port Byron, in 1966. He attended Western Illinois University, graduating in 1971.

Bob started working at Golden Seed Co., Cordova, walking corn at the age of 13. He continued working there until retirement in 2003. Bob served as the president for Rock Island County Historical Society. He served on the board of trustees for Black Hawk Mutual Insurance Co. for 30 years. Bob was a proud owner of the family farm, established in 1843. Bob never married and had no children of his own. He was loved by his nieces and nephews. He played Santa Claus, went to ball games and attended school plays and graduations. He shared his love for farming and agriculture with all of them.
He is survived by his mother, Eleanor Pettit, Cordova; his sister, Sally Munson, Cordova; his brothers, William (Kate) Pettit, Lake Delton, Wis., James Pettit, Cordova; his nieces and nephews, Carol, Sara, John and Stephanie Yates, Bryan and Brad Gooding, Gina, Alissa and Vanessa Munson, Jayson, Derek and Jesa Pettit, Delany and Elias Pettit. He is also survived by 23 great-nieces and -nephews and four great-great-nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his father, George Pettit; sisters, Sherrill Gooding and Suzann Oaks; brother, Thomas Pettit; niece, Bretta Gooding; and great-nephew, William Gooding.
