Illinois announces 75 more coronavirus deaths

CHICAGO (AP) — The total number of coronavirus deaths in Illinois inched closer to the 5,000 mark, as state officials announced Saturday that the virus had claimed another 75 lives.

In a news release, the Illinois Department of Public Health said that there have been 4,790 coronavirus deaths in Illinois and that the the newest 2,352 positive tests brings the statewide total of virus cases in the state to 107,796.

The health department also said that coronavirus cases have been reported in all but two of the state's 102 counties.

As the state has reported in previous updates, the bulk of the deaths occurred in Cook

Illinois continues to ramp up its testing, with the health department reporting that more than 25,000 tests were conducted in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of tests conducted in the state to more than 722,000.

That total includes the 107,796 people who have tested positive for the virus since the state's first case was reported in late January.
