Illinois State Police have released the names of two people killed Wednesday in a five-car pile up on Interstate 74.
Ryan A. Love, 40, of Peoria, was pronounced dead at the scene. Timothy J. Feary, 33, of Millidgeville, was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Galseburg and pronounced dead.
According to Illinois State Police Trooper Jason Wilson, the accident happened when a 2013 Peterbuilt semi-truck driven by Clifford A. Rasmussen, 55, of Buffalo Lake, Minnesota, failed to slow down as traffic approached a construction zone at mile marker 41 on northbound I-74, about five miles north of Galesburg.
The semi struck the back of a 2006 Mazda driven by Mr. Love and caused a chain reaction with three other vehicles: a 1998 Toyota Camry driven by Mr. Feary, a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Daniel M. Langan, 57, Dunlap, Illinois, and a 2013 Kenworth truck driven by John O. Rattray, 37, Lauderhill, Florida.
The semi and Mazda were sent off the roadway into an east ditch, according to Trooper Wilson.
Mr. Rasmussen and Mr. Langan were also sent to St. Mary's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Trooper Wilson said. Mr. Rattray escaped without injury.
The accident remains under investigation by Illinois State Police.
