WHAT WE KNOW: In April, Atkinson Village Board members approved a resolution allowing Western Illinois Landfill LLC, Chicago, to purchase the landfill from Branko Vardijan of Chicago.
WHAT'S NEW: At their meeting Monday, board members learned from Mayor Ken Taber the sale of the landfill has been finalized. The village board had previously approved the sale.
Taber said the resolution also stated that Western Illinois “will assume and comply with the duties and obligations of the village host agreement and other conditions specified.”
The Atkinson Landfill Co., originally owned by the village, was sold to Vardijan of Chicago in 1992. A contract between the village and the Atkinson Landfill provided the village with a volume-based fee for materials placed in the landfill.
The landfill closed in August 2013 for exceeding the maximum permitted height of 711 feet; it reopened in June 2018.
