MOLINE -- MetroLink has launched service from its newly constructed Mega Stop at SouthPark Mall, 4500 16th St., Moline.
A public ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the stop, which is located outside the south mall entrance, immediately west of JC Penney's.
According to MetroLink, a mega stop is a place where multiple buses collect under one covered platform. This one is 3,400 square feet and will accommodate four buses. The stop also features real time signage, lighting, landscaping and seating.
Jennifer Garrity, MetroLink's manager of administration, said the cost of the mega stop and related access work was $1.2 million. All costs were covered with Federal Transit Administration funds and proceeds from the sale of the former transit garage in Rock Island, she said.
"SouthPark is a key destination for many employees and shoppers who utilize transit for their commuting needs. We have long maintained SouthPark Mall as one of our mega connection points throughout the system," Ms. Garrity said.
The project was completed through a partnership with SouthPark's owner, Macerich Co., which is redeveloping the mall.
“Our goal is to continue to improve the shopping experience and better serve the growing community. The opening of the new Metro Mega Stop is the ideal complement to further connect with our local community," said Kathy Jurgens, the mall's senior property manager.
