The home at 2533 21st Avenue, in Rock Island, was struck by lightning on Wednesday, causing a small fire.

ROCK ISLAND — Neighbors are being credited with helping to control the fire from a lightning strike to a home in the 2500 block of 21st Avenue under control until firefighters could arrive on the scene Wednesday afternoon.

According to Battalion Chief Terry Smith, lightning struck the corner of the house at 2533 21st Avenue causing a small fire that was limited to the gutters and was under control within 10 minutes.

No one was home at the time and no injuries were reported.

The rain also played a role in preventing the fire from spreading.

The fire department received the call about 3:52 p.m.

The damage was estimated at about $2,000 but the home was considered habitable Wednesday.
