ROCK ISLAND — A total of 38 Rock Island High School seniors are starting the new school year as 2018 Charles O. Austin Jr. Scholars.
Certificates were presented to the honorees at Tuesday’s school board meeting by Rocky Principal Jeff Whitaker and Julie Hansen, daughter of the late Chuck Austin.
Hansen told the seniors the scholarship recognizes academic excellence and is awarded early in the school year to allow for students to include the honor in their college applications.
The Austin award was established in 1998 to recognize Rock Island High School students who have completed six semesters of study at the school and earned at least a 3.5 grade-point average or higher during each quarter Honor Roll.
