Civil War monument

Civil War memorial statue in front of the Rock Island County Court House is under going restoration.

ROCK ISLAND -- Organizers of the newly formed group that hopes to raise money to restore the Rock Island County Civil War Monument will meet at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street.

Doug Lambert, of the Quad City Civil War Roundtable, and Rock Island County Sheriff's Deputy Lt. Ron Erickson will speak about the Rock Island County Civil War Monument Restoration Project. The pair will list soldiers honored on the memorial, discuss the history of the monument and the need to preserve it. The event is free and open to the public.

The monument, a life-sized marble Civil War solider, was moved into storage recently to protect it from further damage from the elements. The statue was lifted off its pedestal after county officials became concerned it might fall down. It's not clear how much it will cost to restore the soldier, but the county is hoping private funds will help with the project.

For more information on next week's meeting, call the Rock Island Main Library at 309-732-7323.
