WHAT WE KNOW: Dawn Heitzler resigned as an Annawan grade school teacher and was named grade school principal, succeeding Wayne Brau, who is retiring at the end of this school year.

WHAT'S NEW: School board members Wednesday approved hiring Dana Baele to teach grade school in Annawan, beginning with the 2019-2020 school year.

Baele will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Heitzler.

Baele also will serve as the high school basketball cheer coach and junior high track coach for the 2019-2020 school year.

In other business, the board approved spending $11,616 to update the district website with the work to be done by the Apptegy firm. The cost of the update is being funded by monies received through a State of Illinois title grant with no cost to local taxpayers.

Superintendent Matt Nordstrom said, “One of the items the grant is designed to do is to increase parent communication and I feel this new website will do just that. It is designed to be a very mobile-friendly website.”

The board also approved hiring Pat Keane as head junior high baseball coach and John Hornback and Andrew Verstraete as assistant coaches; and Josh Heitzler as head junior high softball coach and Randy Manuel and Cole Kraft as assistant coaches. The junior high baseball and softball programs will have their inaugural seasons in the fall of 2019 as new cooperative athletic programs with Wethersfield.

The board also:

• Approved the resignation of Alta Courter as high school basketball cheer coach.

WHAT'S NEXT: Learned that Annawan High School graduate from the Class of 2000, Susan (Guthrie) Mercier, who is employed by the United States Securities & Commission in Washington, D.C., will be a speaker at the Sunday, May 19, commencement exercises for Annawan High School graduates.
