The Rev. Janet Waychoff, pastor at First Baptist Church in Rock Island, and her dog, Cuddles, are by the banner inviting the public to the church’s first annual Car Show, Children’s Carnival & Gospel Concert on Saturday, July 13, at the church.

ROCK ISLAND — Area residents of all ages are invited to the first Car Show, Children’s Carnival & Gospel Concert at First Baptist Church in Rock Island.

The event is from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at the church, 3020 30th St., Rock Island.

An electronic race track for Pinewood Derby-style cars will be set up in the church for children and adults races from noon until 12:30 p.m. Those interested in participating are asked to build and bring their own boxcar. First-, second- and third-place trophies will be awarded on speed.

The car show on the church grounds will feature collectible cars, and a judge will award trophies to the top 20 cars at the show.

Free hot dogs, chips and beverages will be served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. during the children’s carnival. A food truck will be located on the church grounds for those attending wanting to purchase food.

“State of Grace” of Sullivan (Ill.) will be featured in the Gospel Concert from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

The Rev. Janet Waychoff, church pastor, said, “We want kids, grandkids, friends and neighbors to join us for a fun-filled day.”

The effort is being made by the church as community outreach, she said.

“As I think about our church hosting this event, it also makes me think about scripture from Romans 15:7, which reads ‘Accept one another then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God,’ and we feel God has directed us through scripture to reach out to friends and neighbors.”
