Donald B. Phelps

MOLINE — Donald B. Phelps, 91, of Moline, passed Sunday, June 30, 2019, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital in Guttenberg, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory Ltd., Moline. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 246. Memorials may be made to University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center (200 Hawkins Drive, Iowa City, IA 52242) or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (262 Danny Thomas Place Memphis, TN 38105).

Donald was born Oct. 16, 1927, in Moline, the son of Burgess and Kathryn (Arnold) Phelps. He married Mary Lou Kolb on Feb. 19, 1949, at the First Presbyterian Church, Moline. She preceded him in death Feb. 28, 2017. He was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the Moline VFW Lodge 2153 and the American Legion Post 246. He retired as a cabinetmaker at the former Bratton Cabinet Shop after 30 years. He then went to work for the State of Illinois East Moline Correctional Center as a carpenter supervisor. He enjoyed woodworking and making his family keepsake chests.

Survivors include his children, Donald M. (Donna) Phelps, Moline, and Daniel M. (Sandy) Phelps, Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren, Candice (Jeremy) Heider, Jackson, Mo., Erin Phelps, Rock Island, D.J. Phelps, Rock Island; Andrew (Amy) Phelps, Guttenberg, Iowa; great-grandsons, Maddux Heider and Ayden Phelps; stepgrandchildren, Jamie (Michael) Oldfather, Moline, Ron (Sue) Tucker, Moline, Robin (Anton) Reginald, Omaha, Amy (Aaron) Nelson, Normal, Ill., Molly (Chris) York, Cambridge; stepgranddaughter-in-law, Heather Elmore, LeClaire; 19 stepgreat-grandchildren; sister, Mar-G Foreman, California.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brother, Terry; and a stepgrandson, Bradly Elmore.
