Teachers wear jeans to fund scholarships

Matherville teachers supported students on Sept. 26 by paying $3 to wear jeans. Proceeds from the event, and others like it planned this school year, will help fund scholarships for Sherrard School District seniors.

SHERRARD — Teachers in the Sherrard School District are helping to fund a scholarship with “Jeans Days.”

Throughout the year, Sherrard teachers are participating in designated “Jean Days” when they can contribute $3 and wear blue jeans and T-shirts in honor of the scholarship drive.

For the past eight years, the Sherrard Education Association has contributed to a scholarship fundraiser for seniors via the events. The T-shirts carry the school’s message: “We Inspire, We Empower, We Prepare.”

Seniors interested in applying for scholarships from the association must write an essay about a person who has affected them. The SEA council reads the essays anonymously and votes for winners.

Last year the association gave out four $500 scholarships to students, who read their essays on an Academic Achievement Night.
