Former best-selling celebrity biographer Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) has fallen out of step with the times and is struggling to pay her bills, when she comes up with a scheme to make money from writing and selling forged letters by famous authors. A far more comedically subdued role for McCarthy, she nonetheless shines playing off screen partner Richard E. Grant, the two of them forming a criminally funny odd couple. For her performance, McCarthy garnered her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
