INDEPENDENCE, Wis. – More than 1,300 people attended the 39th Trempealeau County dairy breakfast June 8 at High Hillside Acres near Independence. Hosts George and Mary Gierok also hosted the breakfast in 2005. Their beautiful grazed farm situated in Traverse Valley is home to 55 cows, young stock, cats, 12 chickens and Mariska, a St. Bernard.

George Gierok bought the farm in 1991 just before he and Mary Bragger were married. They now have four children and a son-in-law. Gierok family members say they like to use the breakfast as a teaching time to tell people about dairy farming. They enjoy seeing reactions from both young and old who attend.

LeeAnne Bulman writes about agriculture from her farm overlooking the beautiful Danuser Valley on Wisconsin’s west coast. She is the author of “Haffa Huffy or All Huffey.”
