Western Illinois University WIU.EDU/HERE WIU-QUAD CITIES WIU-MACOMB Biology Student Named Goldwater Scholar Senior Mariah Dicksen, a biology major from Lockport, IL, has been selected for the prestigious Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. She is the first WIU female student to be selected for the award. Dicksen is one of only 14 college students in Illinois named a recipient of this esteemed national scholarship, and one of only four students from Illinois public higher education institutions. Music Professor Named WIU Speech Path Graduate Students: Pulitzer Prize Finalist School of Music Professor James Romig has been named one of two finalists for the Pulitzer Prize in Music, the first in the University’s history. Romig was nominated for the prize for the 55-minute piano solo composition, “Still.” The recording that won Romig the designation was released last year by New World Records. While Professor Romig is the first WIU faculty to win the honor, Western also boasts an alumnus who won the coveted prize. Former Chicago Sun-Times reporter Mark Konkol, along with two of his Sun Times colleagues, received a Pulitzer Prize in 2011 for local reporting. Pulitzer judges recognized the trio for “their immersive documentation of violence in Chicago neighborhoods, probing the lives of victims, criminals and detectives as a widespread code of silence impedes solutions.” The former Western Courier news editor graduated from WIU in 1995. Cutting-Edge Crime Lab The new Law Enforcement McCamey Crime Lab affords students experience in cutting-edge and best practice techniques taught by exceptional faculty who have real-world practical expertise in the field. This lab houses alternate light source equipment with magnifying lenses and interchangeable barrier filters to examine fluids, fibers and more. The lab also houses an optical comparator (which examines tool marks; finger, palm and foot prints and glass fragments); a forensic workstation and a ductless dry safe and numerous evidence recovery kits. Supply Chain Success The Supply Chain Management program was named a Top 30 Program in the United States by renowned supply chain scientist Muddassir Ahmed. Nearly 67% of SCM internships turn into full-time job offers, and more than 50% of all students have a full-time job lined up by the first semester in their senior year. The average starting salary for WIU SCM grads is between $50-60K, with 10% of WIU graduates earning more than $60K in their first jobs. Cultivating Tomorrow’s Leaders With more than 400 acres of farm ground, livestock centers and three greenhouses, Agriculture students have the opportunity to conduct research with traditional, alternative and organic crops, get hands-on experience with livestock in WIU farms, laboratories and test stations, be part of award-winning student organizations and judging teams and have access to outstanding internships and supportive alumni who help build their professional networks. WIU Physics Department Congressional Tops National List of Internships Political Science major Margarita Sotelo Master’s Degrees Awarded hasSenior been awarded a prestigious internship by the The WIU Department of Physics is ranked first in the nation by the American Physical Society’s list of the average number of master’s degrees awarded per year between 2015-2017. WIU awarded an average of 17 degrees per year during that period, with the closest school being California State University Long Beach, with an average of 14. Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. The award allows promising Latino undergraduate students to experience working in a Congressional office, while participating in professional, leadership and civic engagement development programs. 100% Pass Rate, 100% Job Placement Master’s students graduating with a Master of Science degree in Speech Pathology from WIU have a 100% pass rate on the national speech certification exam, as well as a 100% job placement rate. Along with the master’s degree, WIU also offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology. These degree programs come with hands-on training in the department’s Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, which gives WIU grads a leg up on the competition. WIU Nursing Students: Tailored Hands-On Experiences Recently, eight WIU School of Nursing students had the opportunity to expand their academic experience while working for one week at the Ann and RobertH. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, thanks to a partnership with WIU Alumnus Patrick Magoon who leads the award-winning hospital. In addition to the unique hands-on experience at Lurie, senior nursing students recently spent the day learning about critical care and flight nursing during their Code Blue Day. Thanks to the incredible academic opportunities at WIU, School of Nursing graduates have a 100% job placement rate. Prestigious Psychology Research Award WIU junior Psychology major Megan Bardmass, of Edwardsville, IL, has been admitted to a prestigious Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) summer program at the University of Michigan.
