Quad-Cities Online Webcam FAQ

Q: What am I seeing?
A: Following is a description of what you'll see with our webcams:

RiverCam: You are looking at the Interstate 74 bridge over the Mississippi River, between Moline, Ill., and Bettendorf, Iowa. The camera is based in Moline, so you are looking north toward the Iowa side of the river.

LeveeCam: You are seeing the Levee in Davenport, Iowa, looking across the Mississippi river from Rock Island, Illinois.

Q: What happened to the John Deere Commons camera?
A: Due to technical problems, the JD Commons camera has been retired.

Q: Why can't I see any video on RiverCam?
A: If you're simply seeing a gray box where the image should be, your browser is probably having a problem with the Java streaming applet. Try to force a reload by hitting the reload/refresh button in your browser while holding the [shift] key down. You may also have your browser security settings restricted to disallow the running of Java applets.

Also, the Java applet uses port 8888. If you access the Internet from behind a firewall, your access to that port may be restricted.

Q: Why is the video on RiverCam so jerky?
A: This is a "streaming" webcam. Streaming means that the image is continuously refreshed in near real-time. The faster your connection to the Internet, the better the video will look. If you're on a high-speed connection, it looks like video. Viewing it on a dial-up connection will cause the images to look jerky, because the browser isn't refreshing the image as fast.

Q: Why does RiverCam suddenly stop working after a few minutes?
A: The video stream is limited to 3 minutes of viewing to conserve bandwidth. Simply hit reload/refresh to start over if you would like to resume viewing.

Q: Why am I prompted to download Windows Virtual Machine?
A: The new RiverCam uses a Java applet to stream the video. Some Windows users may be prompted to download and install the Windows Virtual Machine (from Microsoft) when using RiverCam the first time. Additional information is available at the Microsoft website.
