16-ounce tub sour cream
1 stick margarine
10-1/2-ounce can cream of mushroom soup
2-1/2 pounds frozen shredded hash browns
6 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Salt and pepper to taste
1/4 cup finely chopped onion (optional)

Combine all ingredients in a crock pot and stir well. Cook on low for 4 hours, stirring occasionally.
