Grandma Coopman's Sugar Cookies

Makes 4 dozen 3-inch cookies. These were always a special birthday treat when we were growing up.

Ingredients

3/4 cup soft shortening (part butter)
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2-1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Mix thoroughly shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Sift together and stir in dry ingredients. Chill at least 1 hour. Roll out 1/8-inch thick. Cut into shapes. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 400 degrees for 6-8 minutes.

1989 — 25 years ago: The final tallies are not yet in for the summer 1989 Quad-Cities tourism season, but officials are expecting the number of visitors to the area to be at least as good as, if not better than, 1988.
