1857 -- 150 years ago
For several days we have been advertising Moore And Meighan's Grocery Store as being on the corner of Rock Island and Madison Streets. There is no such street as Rock Island Street in this city. The store is on Illionis and Madison Streets.

1882 -- 125 years ago
The poll tax has been ordered to be collected and the street commissioner will soon have his hands full. Work on the streets is now at a standstill because of lack of funds.

1907 -- 100 years ago
Charles Bigney, Boston swimmer swam across the river to Davenport and back in 43 minutes before a crowd of 3,500 yesterday. The return was made in 18 minutes and 22 seconds.

1932 -- 75 years ago
Construction operations at the site of the Rock Island Locks and roller dam will be inspected late next week by a high official of the Army Engineer Corps.

1957 -- 50 years ago
Mrs. Frank Hill, Rock Island, a patient at the Rock Island County Tuberculosis Sanatorium, yesterday received a 'helping hand' from another Rock Islander, Mrs. Arlene Sweeney, in the form of an automatic washer and drier.

1982 -- 25 years ago
Federal budget cuts are forcing Rock Island-Milan public school officials to drop a high-school remedial reading program and to slash the program in half at the elementary and junior high level.

1864 — 150 years ago: A large pair of elk, captured in Iowa, were exhibited in Market Square today.
1889 — 125 years ago: The Rock Island Arsenal dam was being constructed under the supervision of Charles Frances, of Lowell, Mass.
1914 — 100 years ago: Mrs. Frank Mixer, of Rock Island, was the winner of the final preliminary for the women's handicap golf cup at Rock Island arsenal links.
1939 — 75 years ago: Sixteen hundred persons — many from war-fearful Europe — arrived in New York aboard the German liner Bremen. For two days on the trip, passengers were cut off from the world with both incoming and outgoing radio messages banned.
1964 — 50 years ago: Police reported five youths have been involved in the theft of about seven cars in recent weeks. Three of the youths were arrested Saturday afternoon, one was in custody as the result of a previous arrest, and the fifth is expected to be arrested today.
1989 — 25 years ago: The Rock Island/Milan School Board is asking the city to tear down Franklin School and allow the school district to pay back the estimated $100,00 cost during 10 years.
