The highlight of the Quad City Botanical Center, 2525 4th Ave., Rock Island, is its 6,444-square-foot tropical Sun Garden conservatory with a 14-foot waterfall, reflecting pools, and a 70-foot skylight peak. The center also has extensive outdoor displays, including a Conifer Garden, a Physically Challenged Garden, a Scrambled Alphabet Garden, and perennial gardens. It has a gift shop, and works by local artists are on display. See the website for special events. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday (until 8 p.m. Tuesday); noon-5 p.m. Sunday (April-Oct.); 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday; noon-4 p.m. Sunday (Nov.-March). See the website for holiday hours. 1914 -- 100 years ago: Wires of the defunct Union Electric Co. are being removed by city electricians.
1939 -- 75 years ago: The Bishop Hill softball team won the championship in WHB"S Mississippi Valley tournament at Douglas Park.
1964 -- 50 years ago: A boom in apartment construction has hit Rock Island, with approximately 300 units either in or near the construction stage or due for an early rezoning decision.
1989 -- 25 years ago: Members of the Bi-State Metropolitan Planning Commission are hoping to revive their push for a new $70 million four-lane bridge spanning the Mississippi River.
