Today is Saturday, July 12, the 193rd day of 2014. There are 172 days left in the year.

1864 -- 150 years ago: John Whitsitt, of Preemption, has just returned from Kentucky with some splendid specimens of the fine-blooded stock of that state.
1889 -- 125 years ago: The annual picnic of the Rock Island and Mercer County Orangemen was held yesterday in Little's Grove, two miles north of Preemption. The Rev. G.W. Gue, of Rock Island, was the principal speaker.
1914 -- 100 years ago: H.H. Cleaveland was re-elected president of the Rock Island Board of Education.
1939 -- 75 years ago: The 96-degree temperature at 3:45 this afternoon set a two-year record. Cooling breezes tonight are promised to drop the mercury to about 70 degrees.
1964 -- 50 years ago: Jack Rugh, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Rugh, of Coal Valley, reported today to Northern Illinois University at DeKalb for Peace Corps training.
1989 -- 25 years ago: A proposal to raise tolls for Rock Island's Centennial Bridge from 25 to 50 cents by October is expected to come before the city council Aug. 14. The increase would help pay for bridge repairs.
