Robert M. Johnson Jr., 66, of Taylor Ridge, formerly of Milan, died on Tuesday April 23, 2013, at his home.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, April 29, at Edgington Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 13228 140th St. W., Taylor Ridge. Visitation will be Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan, and Monday from 9:30 a.m. to service time at church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rock Ridge Food Pantry or Rock Island Rescue Mission. Burial will be at Western Township Cemetery, Orion.
Robert was born on July 2, 1947, in Moline, the son of Robert Sr. and Shirley J. Johnson. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1965, and later from MacMurry College, Jacksonville, in 1969, with a bachelor's degree of science in mathematics.
Robert married Kathleen Helms on Oct. 2, 1971, in Rock Island.
From 1953 to 1971, Robert played baseball starting on the first Little League team in Milan, Babe Ruth and later Connie Mac leagues. Robert was known as an outstanding catcher. For 10 years, he coached several Babe Ruth teams.
Mr. Johnson was employed at Modern Woodmen of America, Rock Island, for 40 years before retiring in February 2010. He worked in the actuarial and claims departments as a supervisor of agency. In 1998, Modern Woodmen of America appointed Robert to the Advisory Board for the Salvation Army. From 1990 to 1992, he was a project business consultant for Junior Achievement, teaching economics to students at Edison Junior High School, Rock Island.
In 2000, Robert spearheaded a program placing senior citizens as volunteers in classes throughout the Rockridge School District.
Robert loved the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Edgington and the entire church family. For several years, he taught junior high Sunday school classes. Robert later taught adult Sunday school classes and Sunday evening adult Bible studies until he resigned because of ill health.
Robert is survived by his wife, Kathleen; daughter, Jennifer Lynn, Taylor Ridge; his mother, Shirley J. Johnson, Milan; sister and her husband, Cynthia and Gary Deitch, Alpha; nephew and wife, Major Wm. David and Angela Deitch, Honolulu, Hawaii; and niece, Heather Deitch and her fiance, Joe Leckliter, Kissimmee, Fla. He also will be missed by his faithful companion cat, Muffin.
Robert was preceded in death by his father, Robert M. Johnson Sr.; maternal and paternal grandparents, two aunts; three uncles; two cousins; and a second cousin, "Little Joe" Johnson.
