Thomas J. Marckese Sr., 91, of East Moline, formerly of Moline, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at home.
Services are at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Burial, with military honors presented by the Moline American Legion Post 246, will be at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to ARC of the Quad Cities Area.
Thomas was born Feb. 3, 1922, in Rock Island, a son of George and Anna LaCorte Marckese. He married Betty May Johanson on Nov. 2, 1946, in Rock Island. She preceded him in death on April 21, 2001.
He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. During the war, Tom served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater in Guadalcanal, Admiralty Island, New Britain, and the liberation of the Philippines. He was a Purple Heart recipient for wounds received in battle on Luzon.
Tom co-owned Model Shoe Repair and Shine in Rock Island with his brother, Charles, for more than 35 years. He retired in 1984.
He was a member of VFW Post 2153, Moline, for many years. He and his late wife, Betty, loved ballroom dancing, playing cards and traveling together.
Surviving are his children (and spouses), Jo Ann (Ralph) Clark, East Moline, Thomas (Betty) Marckese Jr., Geneseo, Patricia (Guy) Williams, Palm Harbor, Fla., and Christine Marckese (Jim Spencer), San Diego, Calif.; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Mark Marckese; three brothers, George, Philip and Charles Marckese; and one sister, Rose Scott.
