After recently earning All-State girls' basketball kudos from the Chicago Sun-Times, it was time for the Champaign News-Gazette to confer its own such honor upon Annawan's Celina VanHyfte.
The Bravettes' 6-foot junior standout was named to the paper's 36th annual All-State squad, which covers players from all four classes with a 15-player first team, a 15-player second team, a 50-player special mention squad and a 100-player honorable mention roster.
VanHyfte was the highest-honored area cager, landing on the second team after helping lead Annawan to the Class 1A third-place state trophy. Even playing on a severely sprained ankle, she got the better of first-team choice Micah Jones' Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City squad with a 10-point victory in the bronze-medal game at Normal.
Five more area standouts earned places on the special mention squad. From the Western Big 6 came Rock Island's Shavonne Brewer (4A) and Galesburg's Jessica Lieber (Class 3A), both senior guards. From 2A came Orion senior post standout Cassidy Clark and Riverdale senior forward Hannah Nimrick, the leading scorer for a regional-title team. Joining them from 1A was Wethersfield senior guard Sarah Hansen.
Two more local cagers landed on the honorable mention list, as Alleman senior guard/forward Anne Bohnert (3A) and Riverdale senior guard Elle May (2A) were recognized. Stark County junior center Madisyn Paxson (1A) was also an honorable mention pick.
