Daryl D. Townsend, 77, of Rock Island, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2013, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Salem Lutheran Church, Moline, with visitation one hour prior to service time at the church. Visitation also will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Private inurnment will be at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, with military honors by Moline American Legion Post No. 246. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to Salem Lutheran Church or to the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center.
Daryl was born on Jan. 16, 1936, in Rock Island, the son of Charles and Estelene Ryberg Townsend. He married Bonnie Hogren on June 27, 1959. He was a 1954 graduate of Rock Island High School, where he played on the 1953-54 undefeated football teams. Daryl graduated from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., where he participated in football and track.
He served in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. Daryl was employed by Modern Woodmen of America as an administrator of subsidiary products for more than 20 years, retiring in 2001. He was currently working as a courier for Metropolitan Medical Laboratory in Davenport.
Mr. Townsend was a member and past president of the Rock Island Noon Kiwanis Club, where he was a George F. Hixson Fellowship recipient. He was elected the 2002-03 Division 17 Lieutenant Governor for the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District of Kiwanis.
Mr. Townsend was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Moline, where he was active with Sunday school, the church choir, the Altar Guild and had been the church treasurer and council president. He also served on many church committees. Daryl also was a former member of the Rock Island Jaycees. He enjoyed fishing, playing bridge, working jig-saw puzzles and playing softball.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; daughter, Ann (Tim) Miller, Rock Island; son, Peter (Lisa) Townsend, Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Ava Miller and Ian Townsend; sister, Donna (Ronald) Sivill, Rock Island; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Pam and Lee Landon, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Margie Gillispie.
