The Dispatch and The Rock Island Argus

The glamor and glitz of Hollywood's self-congratulatory season, culminating in the glitziest glam-fest of them all -- the Academy Awards -- is behind us.

Now that we've acknowledged Tinseltown's faux leaders, it seems a good time to reward those folks who put in daily performances of substance that make our community shine.

Now in its second year, our Argpatch Awards are designed to honor the region's brightest and best. They are men like local leader Tom Getz, who last year posthumously captured Best Male in a Leading Role for a lifetime of volunteering body of work that would be hard to duplicate. And women like Ginny Wilson-Peters, last year's Best Female in a Leading Role. In announcing the award, we called her "the enthusiastic teacher, coach and corporate consultant whose work ignites people to explore new possibilities in their lives."

So you see, while they're meant to be fun, the Argpatches (a contraction of our Dispatch/Argus names) also mean business. Take for example, the Q-C's best director, Clair Peterson, the man who captains the successful John Deere Classic year in and year out.

But serious or fun, we hope there's something in there to appeal to all because the awards cannot happen without your help. Time, however, is running out to make your nominations for best performance in any or all of the categories from which a panel of our Academy of Non-Motion Picture Args and Patches will make the final decisions. Besides a chance to win a nifty and prize-filled Argpatch Basket, those who get their nominations in by next Sunday, also will have the opportunity to honor Q-C greatness in the following areas:

-- Best Male in a Leading Role (Male who is a Q-C community leader)
-- Best Female in a Leading Role (Female who is a Q-C community leader)
-- Best Animal (Q-C Animal or pet that made biggest news of past year)
-- Best Artist (Q-C artist who did something really cool in the past year)
-- Best Live Action in Sports (Best Q-C public sporting event, game, race, etc.)
-- Best Live Action in Entertainment (Best Q-C concert, show, play, musical, etc.)
-- Best Original Store (Best new non-chain store to open, or existing store to expand)
-- Best Sound (Best local musician, singer or band)
-- Best Menu (Best offerings by a non-chain eatery)
-- Best Drink, Alcoholic (Best concoction served at a non-chain restaurant or bar)
-- Best Drink, Nonalcoholic (Best coffee or other nonalcoholic creation served at a non-chain restaurant or bar):

Once you've come up with your entries, send their names, their category and any supporting statements via email to features@qconline.com, or mail them to: Argpatch Awards, c/o The Dispatch-Argus, 1720 5th Ave., Moline, IL 61265. Include your name, town and daytime phone number. And then watch the newspapers' Living section for the winners.

Remember, if you don't get your choices in by Sunday, your Q-C faves will never -- regardless of how richly deserved -- get to hear those five little words words:

"And the Argpatch goes to ..."
