Ruben N. Egeberg, 89, of Rock Island, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at Faith Lutheran Church, 1611 41st St., Moline. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, and at the church one hour prior to the service. Ruben was born March 23, 1923, in Souris, N.D., to Nils and Anna Lerdahl Egeberg. He graduated from Oak Grove Lutheran High School, Fargo, where he met his future wife, Thelma. Ruben attended Augsburg College and the University of Minnesota. He was a World War II veteran.
Ruben married Thelma Selland on June 6, 1948, at Tunbridge Lutheran Free Church in North Dakota. For 20 years, he worked in Minneapolis as an insurance agent for Lutheran Brotherhood and then for Modern Woodmen of America. In 1968, he moved to Rock Island where he served as manager of marketing at Modern Woodmen until his retirement in 1989. Throughout his career, his passion was to help families secure their financial futures.
Ruben will be remembered for his hospitality, optimistic nature, honesty, graciousness in dealing with others, and for the many friendships formed through church, work, and bridge. To Ruben, no one was a stranger.
He also was known for his stories ("Stop me if you've heard this one …"), frugality (day-old donuts), friendliness ("Come over for coffee"), and his Norwegian conversation opener ("Snakker du norsk?").
The legacy Ruben leaves his family includes faith in Jesus Christ and sensitivity to the needs of others.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma; children, Donna (Bob) Marcue, Minneapolis, Dale (Melinda) Egeberg, Bloomington, Ill., Gary (Peggy) Egeberg, Bloomington, Minn., Janet (Jay) Wilhelm, Moline, and Karen (Barry) Springer, Wilmington, Del.; grandchildren, Jason (Jackie) Wandersee, Tricia (Scott) Burry, Kristen Egeberg, Aubrey Egeberg, Joshua (Allison) Wilhelm, Jennifer Wilhelm, Rebecca Springer, and Brandon Springer; great-grandchildren, Natalie, Alexa, Blake, Noelle, Trevor, Ethan and Taylor; two sisters-in-law; three cousins; and many nieces and nephews.
