State medalists highlight All-WB6 wrestling team

Seven wrestlers who earned medals at the individual state meet highlight the All-Western Big 6 Conference team.

Leading the honorees is Rock Island 120-pound senior B.J. McGhee, who won the Class 2A state title on Saturday night. McGhee, a four-time All-Big 6 selection, is the 18th state champion in league history.

Rocky, which won its third consecutive league title, had a total of six first-team selections. Joining McGhee are Tyler Dehaven (Jr., 126 pounds) Chase Wiggins (Sr., 132), Devin Syler (Sr., 138), Jean-Louis Sawadago (Jr., 145) and Michael Cole (Sr., 170).

Alleman's Sean Wetherell (Sr., 170) and Ben West (Sr., 220), Moline's Christian Smith (Sr. 126) and Adarios Jones (Jr., 285), and United Township's Jeronnie Steward (Jr., 113), Tanner Schuldt (Sr., 152), Deryck Wessels (Sr., 160) and Markus Murphy (Sr., 170).

Rounding out the 18 first-team honorees were Galesburg's Jonathan Mixon (Sr., 182) and Quincy's Trevor Schutte (Fr., 106), Dakota Downs (Sr., 170) and Jaydon Summy (Sr., 195).

In the Class 2A state meet, Murphy took second, Schuldt fourth, Cole fifth and Steward sixth. Jones was third and Downs earned fifth in the Class 3A meet.

For the second time in Big 6 history and first since 1998, the league earned seven state medals. The record is eight set in 2000.
