Western Big 6 Conference rival United Township blocked Rock Island's bid for a wire-to-wire finish atop the Quad Cities Prep Basketball Power Polls. The Panthers pulled off a regional upset Tuesday.
|
The chance for a season-long reign atop the Quad Cities Prep Basketball Power Polls ended Wednesday for the Rock Island girls.
A day after suffering a season-ending setback to fellow Top 10-rated United Township in regional action, the Rocks were replaced in the No. 1 slot by the last wire-to-wire girls' finisher in the local media rankings.
Two-time defending Iowa state champ Assumption (21-2) edged the Rocks (25-4) and Annawan (27-2) in a tight final vote for the distaff portion of the poll.
Assumption, which rated No. 2 last week, and lost a head-to-head thriller with the Rocks in early January, received six of the 16 first-place votes cast for 145 of a possible 160 points.
Rocky slipped to second despite retaining five top nods and totalling 132 points. Annawan was a close third, accounting for 131 points and the other five No. 1 votes.
The Dispatch and The Rock Island Argus administers the poll for a sixth straight season. Participating co-sponsors include WQAD-TV 8, MC22, WFXN-AM 1230's Quad Cities Radio Group, Aledo's WRMJ-FM 102.3, the Kewanee-based Regional Radio Group and the Clinton Herald.
In the boys' bi-state ballot, unbeaten Bettendorf (20-0) retained the top spot over season-starting No. 1 Rock Island (19-4) for the fourth straight week.
The Mississippi Athletic Conference champions picked up 13.5 first-place votes and 155.5 points. The Rocky boys accounted for the other 2.5 top nods and 144.5 points.
Two more boys' votes remain after today's sixth poll of the season.
After two straight weeks featuring little movement in the Top 10s, both sets of rankings were chocked full of change.
Besides Rocky, also tumbling in the girls' ballot because of postseason losses were Riverdale (4th to 6th), Prophetstown (7th to 8th) and Wethersfield (9th to 10th).
Moving up with Assumption in the final girls' rankings were Sherrard (6th to 4th) and upset-minded UT (8th to 7th).
The boys' ballot also saw a shift with North Scott (5th to 3rd) and Monmouth-Roseville (6th to 4th) on the rise after beating, in their respective conferences, tumblers Assumption (4th to 5th) and Rockridge (6th to 3rd).
Sterling Newman (10th to 8th) also jumped in the boys' ratings.
Also a result of Wethersfield (22-6) losing thrice in the last week, and falling out of the Top 10, Moline (17-10) and Pleasant Valley (13-6) finished in a tie for the final Top 10 spot.
In all, 16 boys' and 17 girls' teams received votes this week, with Alleman (16-14) rejoining the final girls' poll of local sportswriters and broadcasters.

Rank. Team (1st) (Rec.) Pts. LWK.
1. Bettendorf (13.5) (20-0) 155.5 1 -- Last week: Beat Davenport North, 67-35 Friday; Beat Burlington, 64-26 Tuesday. Note: An outright Mississippi Athletic Conference crown already is assured, but the Bulldogs want a perfect regular-season, too. Next: Friday at No. 3 North Scott.
2. Rock Island (2.5) (19-4) 144.5 2 -- Last week: Beat No. 16 Galesburg, 58-57 Friday; Won at Aurora Central, 69-54 Saturday. Note: A last-second 3-pointer by C.J. Carr kept alive hopes of a fourth straight Western Big 6 Conference crown for the state-ranked Rocks. Next: Friday at No. 10t Moline; Saturday at state-ranked Peoria Manual.
3. North Scott (19-2) 102 5 -- Last week: Won at Burlington, 56-38 Friday; Won at No. 4 Assumption, 62-45 Tuesday. Note: A MAC title out of the question, the state-ranked Lancers still are spoiling to avenge a 36-point blowout in early January at the 'Dog House. Next: Friday hosts No. 1 Bettendorf.
4. Monmouth-Roseville (21-4) 96 6 -- Last week: Won at No. 3 Rockridge, 69-65 Friday; Beat Farmington, 77-57 Tuesday. Note: The Titans are seeking a second straight West Central North title. Next: Friday hosts Sherrard; Wednesday vs. TBD in Illinois 2A's Monmouth Regional.
5. Assumption (15-5) 94 4 -- Last week: Won at No. 11 Pleasant Valley, 56-52 (2 OT) Friday; Lost to No. 5 North Scott, 62-45 Tuesday. Note: The Knights were unable to repeat as MAC champs. But that doesn't mean Billy Daniel and his Iowa-ranked squad can't contend for a state title. Next: Friday at Davenport West; Monday hosts Central DeWitt in Iowa 3A's Substate 4 playoffs.
6. Rockridge (20-4) 75 3 -- Last week: Lost to No. 6 Monmouth-Roseville, 69-65 Friday. Note: The state-ranked Rockets need to rebound from their first West Central North setback if they hope to score at least a share of the league title this weekend. Next: Friday at Macomb; Wednesday vs. TBD in Illinois 2A's Rockridge Regional.
7. Kewanee (22-4) 61 7 -- Last week: Won at No. 17 Riverdale, 68-62 Thursday; Beat Amboy, 66-33 Saturday; Beat Bureau Valley, 49-44 Tuesday. Note: The Boilermakers finished off a perfect 14-0 title run through the Three Rivers Conference before opening postseason play. Next: Wednesday vs. No. 13t Orion in Illinois 2A's Rockridge Regional.
8. Sterling Newman (22-4) 46 10 -- Last week: Won at Morrison, 67-38 Thursday; Beat No. 17 Riverdale, 80-60 Saturday; Beat Morrison, 70-40 Tuesday. Note: Because of the unbalanced schedule in the TRAC, the Comets only faced Kewanee once in a 13-1 league season. Next: Wednesday vs. TBD in Illinois 2A's Savanna Regional.
9. Danville (21-0) 30 9 -- Last week: Won at Lone Tree, 64-41 Friday. Note: Last season's state runners-up are seeking an unbeaten title this time. Next: Thursday hosts New London in Iowa 1A's District 9 playoffs.
10 (tie). Pleasant Valley (13-6) 22 11 -- Last week: Lost to No. 4 Assumption, 56-52 (2 OT) Friday; Won at Davenport North, 65-50 Tuesday. Note: Experienced, skilled and an extremely dangerous postseason matchup later this month. Next: Friday hosts Clinton.
10 (tie). Moline (17-10) 22 12 -- Last week: Won at state-ranked Quincy, 54-51 Friday. Note: Winning for a fourth straight Big 6 Friday meant more to the Maroons than finally upsetting a state-ranked foe. Ironically, Moline also helped their arch-rival Rocks draw even again in the league race. Next: Friday at No. 2 Rock Island; Saturday at state-ranked Lincoln.
ALSO RECEIVING VOTES:
12. Galva (21-4) 15 13 -- Last week: Won at Annawan, 88-77 (OT) Friday; Beat West Prairie, 67-35 Tuesday. Note: A second straight Lincoln Trail Conference in the books, the Wildcats are now seeking their first regional title since 2002. Next: Friday at Monmouth United; Tuesday vs. Monmouth United in Illinois 1A's ROWVA Regional.
13 (tie). Orion (17-11) 6 15 -- Last week: Beat Macomb, 25-21 Friday; Beat No. 8 Wethersfield, 42-38 Saturday. Note: The bad news for the Chargers is having both Rockridge and Kewanee in the same regional. Next: Friday hosts Carthage Illini West; Wednesday vs. No. 7 Kewanee in Illinois 2A's Rockridge Regional.
13 (tie). Northeast Goose Lake (16-6) 6 14 -- Last week: Beat Monticello, 69-45 Friday. Note: State-tested (and state-ranked) North Cedar looms as a huge postseason roadblock. Next: Thursday hosts Bellevue in Iowa 2A's District 9 playoffs.
15. Wethersfield (22-6) 4 8 -- Last week: Lost at Stark County, 44-41 Friday; Lost at No. 15 Orion, 42-38 Saturday; Beat Monmouth United, 71-47 Tuesday. Note: The Lincoln Trail Conference Tournament champs are spoiling for a regional title "three-match'' with Galva after the Wildcats started a three-game skid for the Geese. Next: Friday hosts Annawan; Wednesday hosts TBD in Illinois 1A's ROWVA Regional.
16. Preston (18-3) 1 NR -- Last week: Idle. Note: The Big East Conference champs also received votes outside of the Top 10 in Iowa 1A's final state poll. Next: Thursday hosts Calamus-Wheatland in Iowa 1A's District 6 playoffs.
-- Dropped out: Galesburg (15-13), Riverdale (14-3).
ALSO ON THE RADAR:
NR. Galesburg (15-13) 0 16 -- Last week: Lost at No. 2 Rock Island, 58-57 Friday. Note: Tough crowd! The Streaks fell off the voting radar despite a one-point loss at Rocky. Voters also forget Galesburg beat the Rocks in mid-December. Next: Friday at United Township.
NR. Riverdale (14-13) 0 17 -- Last week: Lost to No. 7 Kewanee, 68-62 Thursday; Lost at No. 10 Sterling Newman, 80-60 Saturday; Beat Fulton, 75-51 Tuesday. Note: The Rams are spoiling for a quick rematch with Newman. Next: Wednesday vs. West Carroll in Illinois 2A's Savanna Regional.

NR. Bureau Valley (19-11) o NR -- Last week: Beat Erie, 57-53 (OT) Saturday; Lost at No. 1 Kewanee, 49-44 Tuesday. Note: Will hosting dutues help the Storm's regional title hopes? Next: Wednesday vs. Peru St. Bede in Illinois 2A's Manlius Regional.
